Hexham Arts Forum projects

The Inbetween Project

Hexham Arts Forum is currently working in conjunction with Intersections from Newcastle University
on the Inbetween project.
Inbetween is a project looking at cultural regeneration in market towns. The
aim is to hold a series of workshops/events that bring together an international,
interdisciplinary body of researchers, practitioners and sector professionals to
critically consider the potential of the interaction of arts, policy and cultural infrastructure
in the regeneration of market towns.
Whereas there is an established body of literature on urban cultural
regeneration and rural arts practice, market towns or towns of an 'in-between'
size tend to be neglected. Is it applicable to draw on urban or rural
practices and policies for such places, or do we need to rethink the role of
arts policy and practice in these contexts?
The three market towns that are involved in the project are:
Dumfries – Scotland,
Pontypool – Wales
Hexham –England.
Each town will decide how best to interpret the project but each town will hold a two-day symposium
where researchers and practitioners will come together with other interested parties to discuss the project.
The symposium in Hexham is likely to take place in November.
The project is just getting going so watch this space for news. We hope to be advertising for
artists in the next few weeks.
